WATTAGE

Wattage is a measure of the amount of energy or power you are using when you are riding your rollers. Higher resistance requires more power to go a given speed. Conversely, you have to ride a slower speed to maintain the same wattage output when the resistance increases.

Notice on the chart, to cruise at 20mph, the following power is required:

4.5 rollers require approximately 126 watts*
3.0 rollers require approximately 176 watts*
2.25 rollers require approximately 239 watts*

Another way of looking at the chart is to see what speed you would have to be riding on each of the three rollers to maintain the same power output:

At a 200-watt* power output:

4.5 rollers can be ridden at approximately 30mph
3.0 rollers can be ridden at approximately 22mph
2.25 rollers can be ridden at approximately 18mph

Notice how much resistance you can add with the Headwind Fan! With this chart, you can see why we always recommend the Headwind Fan be combined with 4.5 drums. The combination gives you the widest range of resistance, from low to extremely high. You can develop your spin and also get a hard workout when you want one.

Modern training aids such as the SRM Power Meter Cranks (http://www.srm.de/) measure your wattage output on a bicycle, and were used to collect the data on the Wattage Chart.

*The Wattage Chart was created to show you the relative differences in resistance between the various roller models and the accessories. The actual amount of energy required depends on several factors including body weight, tire pressure, wheel aerodynamics, and other factors. But for any one rider, the relative differences you see in the chart still apply.
